Just realized that you are sticking to Ontario as the province she comes from. Actually, in 1848-49 there was no such thing as Ontario! Prior to Canada's Confederation (July 1, 1867) there was Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Quebec), the separate areas of the Maritimes (now New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), and the western territories (which later became British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba); also, of course, the far north, now Nunavut and the Yukon. And to give you some historical background, there was a lot of hostility between English-speaking Upper Canadians (mostly Protestant) and French-speaking Lower Canadians (mostly Roman Catholic). In my opinion, it's rather unlikely that Amelie Paradis would have come from Upper Canada!
